How to Edit Hosts File in Windows 7

I think this is one of the simple issue most of the windows users gone trough. There will be some rare cases where you need to edit the “Hosts” file on your windows 7 computer. The hosts file is the one where one enters hostname and IP Address pair manually as against being served by a Name server (ex: DNS). As always the “hosts” file is under C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ or %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\  and it will not be edited by normal windows users.

This leads me to create and publish a post on “How to edit hosts file in Windows 7”. Look at the simple steps to edit the hosts file on your windows 7computer.

Step 1: Go to start menu in windows 7  and select “all programs” and go to “accessories”.

Step 2: Now right click on Notepad application and click on “run as administrator”.

Step 3: Windows will now ask you for permission to access you hard drive click on Yes to continue.This should launch notepad with elevated privileges. Now you can open and edit the host file with elevated privileges.

Step 4: Go to the file and open the Hosts file[it is located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc ] for editing.Once you finished editing your Hosts file, click on File and Save it.
